RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Squash grown and canned by inmates at the Caledonia Prison Farm in Halifax County is now in the hands of families hit hard by economic woes.

The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice reports that 4,500 cases of canned squash have been donated to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

The donation filled five tractor-trailers.

“The staff and inmates who work on the farm are pleased to be able to make this contribution of our extra vegetables this season,” said Correction Enterprises director Karen Brown in a news release. “We encourage others to make their own donation to a local food bank during Hunger Action Month.”

September is Hunger Action Month in North Carolina.
