RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - A second area code is coming to the Piedmont. This week the agency tasked with regulating the state's utilities approved a plan for area code relief to the 336 number that now serves the Piedmont as the sole dialing code.

With "743" added to the phone dialing option comes the requirement that both the area code and the number be dialed in order to complete a call.

The North Carolina Utilities Commission approved implementation of an all-services distributed overlay to Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point, North Wilkesboro, and Asheboro. Neustar, serving as the North American Numbering Plan Administrator, forecasted that without area code relief, numbering resources for new accounts in the 336 area will be exhausted by the third quarter of 2016, according to the state's Department of Commerce.

Customers will receive more detailed information, including a time schedule for implementation of 10-digit dialing, in future notices from their local telecommunications provider.
