RALEIGH, (AP) — A North Carolina state senator diagnosed with cancer says he still anticipates running for re-election in November if he retains his health.

Democratic Sen. Ed Jones of Halifax County said Tuesday he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the early spring and is undergoing chemotherapy. Jones said in an interview he didn't ask for a prognosis from doctors but he isn't giving up and that miracles happen.

Legislators were honoring Jones later Tuesday with a dinner honoring his service. The 62-year-old Jones is a retired state trooper and former police chief who served two years in the House before joining the Senate in 2007.

Jones has been representing Bertie, Chowan, Gates, Halifax, Hertford, Northampton and Perquimans counties. He's being challenged in the November election by Republican Warren Scott Nail.
