RALEIGH, (AP) — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is reviewing operations at the Shearon Harris Nuclear station near Raleigh to try to determine why two safety valves failed to close last month when the plant was shut down for refueling.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported four federal inspectors are spending the week looking at the mechanical malfunction at the plant operated by Progress Energy.
Officials say there was no safety hazard at the plant because of the failure. But they say there could have been a problem if the plant's pipes had burst and blasted scalding steam onto equipment and plant workers.
Progress has its own team investigating the problem to determine if the valves can be repaired or if they must be replaced.
The incident occurred April 21. |
