RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The U.S. Supreme Court has stopped in its tracks the plan from the Obama administration to impose more regulations on the energy industry. It was a 5 to 4 decision to stay what the administration dubs the Clean Power Plan.

North Carolina is among 28 states challenging the plan in court. Critics say the plan would hike energy bills and take away power that should rest with the states.

The court ruling says the legal challenges must be resolved  before the plan is implemented.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement that the administration disagrees with the ruling and continues to support a plan to reduce carbon emissions.

Gov. Pat McCrory issued a statement praising the ruling.

"We are pleased the Supreme Court recognizes that the federal power plan will dramatically increase North Carolina's electricity rates with little, if any, environmental benefit,” the governor said in a statement. "We will continue to fight the Obama administration's illegal attempts to take over North Carolina's power system."
