RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - An estimated $31 million in flood damage hasn't convinced Federal Emergency Management Agence (FEMA) to provide disaster assistance to eight North Carolina counties, and that denial has prompted Gov. Pat McCrory to appeal the decision.

“We will appeal this denial and I implore Administrator (Craig) Fugate and his staff to re-examine the damage estimates that were submitted,” said the governor in a statement. “Based on FEMA guidelines, we believe the damage estimates submitted are indeed eligible for federal financial assistance.”

The affected counties are Brunswick, Carteret, Dare, Hyde, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico and Pender.

The governor filed his request on October 28, with the state's estimate of $31 million in damage to beaches, roads and infrastructure, as well as required debris removal and emergency protective measures.

To meet the federal guidelines, damage must be more than $13.4 million.
