RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The Navy's goal was to produce 1 gigawatt of renewable energy by 2020, but Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has announced the agency will meet the goal way ahead of schedule.

FederalNewsRadio.com reports that Mabus told federal workers this week that the goal will be met by the end of this year.

The audience included federal workers who are responsible for sustainability efforts in their agencies.

The Navy owns bricks and mortar facilities on land. That includes 117,000 buildings and 3.5 million acres of land, according to FederalNewsRadio.com.
