RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - It appears the admonishment we were given as kids is true: get in trouble and it really will be part of your permanent record.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the FBI has records on 77.7 million Americans and the information ranges from misdemeanors to felonies.

The FBI is given the information by state and local law enforcement officials. It's up to those local officials to notify the FBI of the adjudication of a case, but the newspaper reports that notifying the FBI isn't required. Thus, millions of Americans who have been acquitted or whose cases were dropped, still have a record with the country's premiere federal law enforcement agency.

The FBI reportedly keeps records for 110 years.
