RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The U.S. Department of Agriculture expects to make 65 initial awards of up to $100,000 each in fiscal year 2013 as part of its outreach to science-based small businesses.

Interested firms have until September 6, 2012 to apply for the Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) grants aimed at high-quality research or research and development related to the solving of scientific problems that could lead to significant public benefit.

Phase I of SBIR is to determine the scientific or technical feasibility of ideas. Awards will be announced May 1, 2013. USDA will announce the award recipients, which will then have eight months to bring the Phase I idea to fruition.
