RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Veterans Administration plans to streamline and improve the delivery of health care services has been a bust according to budget and staffing figures from the agency, and that conclusion and accompanying data has armed Sen. Richard Burr fresh with information to push forward his reform plan.

According to the Federal Times, recent inspector general reports show mismanagement and waste among an agency whose budget for its veterans integrated services network (VISN) tops $203 million and its staff totals more than 1,700.

The newspaper quotes Sen. Richard Burr, the highest ranking Republican on the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee, as commenting that "the growth and duplication of duties we have seen at VISN headquarters offices and medical facilities quite simply is troubling." Burr's comments were made last month. He has introduced a bill to cut VISN offices back to 12. Burr's committee will discuss the problem at a June 27 hearing.
