A bill filed in the General Assembly would prohibit school board from suing their respective counties for more money. 

 

Supporters of House Bill 305 argue that school boards who use tac dollars to sue county commissions for more tax dollars doesn’t make sense. Opponents of the bill say school boards need the courts to provide the leverage to secure the funds needed to educate students. 

 

School districts do not have independent taxing authority, therefore, are dependent on counties for a significant portion of funding. School boards do have the right to mediation if they have a serious disagreement funding disagreement with the home county. 

 

The primary sponsors of the bill are House members Debra Conrad of Winston-Salem, Larry Potts of Lexington, Carl Ford of China Grove and Michael Wray of Gaston county.
