Governor Pat McCrory congratulated the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University today for being ranked one of the top five medical schools in the country for its high percentage of graduates pursuing family medicine by the American Academy of Family Physicians. The Brody School of Medicine ranked fourth on this year's list and was the only school in the Southeast to make the top five.

"Congratulations to the Brody School of Medicine on achieving this national recognition," said Governor McCrory. "East Carolina University and the Brody School are helping to lead the way in preparing students for careers, especially in training much needed primary care physicians. The investments we have made in the Brody School of Medicine and East Carolina University will continue to build on this progress for future generations."

The 2015-17 budget signed by Governor McCrory provided an additional $16 million in new funding to support medical education at the Brody School of Medicine.

In addition to the budget allocation, East Carolina University will benefit from the Connect NC bond. Proposed by the governor and overwhelmingly approved by the voters in March, the Connect NC bond will provide $90 million for a new, state-of-the-art Life Sciences and Biotechnology Building at East Carolina University. Additionally, nearby Pitt Community College will receive $8.3 million from Connect NC for new construction and upgrades on campus.

State Budget Director Andrew Heath visited East Carolina University yesterday on behalf of Governor McCrory to tour the Health Sciences Campus  and discuss the state’s investments in the university and the Brody School of Medicine. Director Heath joined Dr. Nicholas Benson, Interim Dean of the Brody School of Medicine, for the campus tour, including the robotic surgery center.
