RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The state Board of Education has charged a committee with reviewing a proposal to require stricter background checks of teachers seeking jobs in North Carolina.

According to the Raleigh News & Observer, the committee will be led by Greg Alcorn, working with Lt. Gov. Dan Forest, who is a member of the board.

The review of background checks comes after a USA Today story reported that North Carolina has a weak system that makes local governments responsible for the checks.

One idea is to require fingerprinting.
