RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Gaston County teacher Bobbie Cavnar is $7,500 richer after being named the Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year.

Cavnar teachers English and Journalism at South Point High School in Gaston County. He succeeds Keana Triplett, an English teacher at Ashe County High School.
 
Cavnar has taught for 16 years, the last 12 at South Point High School. He came to North Carolina from Florida. He currently participates in the Gaston County Teacher Induction Program for Success where he trains incoming teachers in model classroom best practices.

He will receive the use of a state vehicle for one year, a one-year leased vehicle from Flow Automotive, LLC, the opportunity to attend a seminar at the NC Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT), a mobile device from Lenovo valued at approximately $1,600, an engraved vase, a trip to the National Teacher of the Year Conference and International Space Camp, and the opportunity to travel abroad through an endowment sponsored by The Center for International Understanding.
 
Cavnar will also take a seat on the State Board of Education and NC Public School Forum board.

Cavnar earned a bachelor’s degree in English Education in 1999 from Florida State University and a master’s degree in English in 2012 from UNC-Charlotte.
