RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Gov. Pat McCrory's budget outline for the new year includes raising average public school teacher pay by 5 percent, plus bonuses averaging 5 percent.
The governor announced his priorities Tuesday at his high school alma mater, Ragsdale High School in Guilford County.
The pay hike equates to more than $2,000 per teacher. The governor's spokesman said the plan would cost about $250 million per year.
Bonuses of 3.5 percent would be given to teachers and principals. The governor said veteran teachers with more than 24 years of service would see a $5,000 bonus. Cost estimates for the bonus plan sit at $165 million.
Legislators reconvene in Raleigh April 25. Adjusting the new fiscal year's budget is the No. 1 priority.
