RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The state's new school performance data has generated praise from Gov. Pat McCrory. In a statement, the governor congratulated teachers for a three point average gain in fourth grade reading scores, and upticks in science and math scores for elementary and middle schools.

The state's graduation rate, which increased to 85.4 percent, also got the governor's attention and praise.

“The graduation rate is a critical education measure because it has real world consequences for every student,” McCrory said in the statement. “Without a high school diploma, it becomes incredibly difficult for a person to further their education or get a decent job. I am very grateful to the teachers of North Carolina for collaboratively making higher education and a career possible for the overwhelming majority of students in our state.”

The governor has committed to raising entry level teacher pay from the state to $35,000 in order to recruit the best and brightest to the profession.
