RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Gov. Pat McCrory issued the following statement upon learning of the death of legendary UNC-Chapel Hill basketball coach Dean Smith.

"Ann and I were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Coach Smith. Coach Smith is a legend on and off the court and his life will leave a lasting legacy at Chapel Hill and across the state and nation.

May the skies shine Carolina Blue in your honor Coach."

Smith died Sunday at age 83 after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for several years. He was considered one of the most innovative coaches in history for developing the 4-corners approach to the game. That play led to the creation of the shot clock, an integral part of the game.
