RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - State Superintendent June Atkinson has been named president of the Council of Chief State School Officers. The appointment came during the Council’s 2014 Annual Policy Forum and Business Meeting in San Diego.

Atkinson succeeds Kentucky Commissioner of Education Terry Holliday, who at one time was superintendent of Iredell-Statesville Schools.

Atkinson is the second North Carolina State Superintendent to lead the Council in recent years. State Superintendent Mike Ward served as president in 2002.

Atkinson will lead the Council’s nine-member board of directors, which manages the business affairs of the Council and is its governing body.
