Following approval of their July minutes, Board members will recognize the 2014 North Carolina State and National Schools of Character: Southern Guilford Middle, Colfax Elementary and Southwest Guilford Middle (Guilford County Schools); the 2014 State Schools of Character and National Honorable Mention Southern Guilford High (Guilford County Schools); the 2013 North Carolina finalists for the Presidential Awards in Math and Science Teaching: Mathematics, Grades 7-12 - Brian Frees, Hendersonville Middle (Henderson County Schools), Julie Riggins, East Forsyth High (Winston-Salem/Forsyth Schools), and Katie Salter, West Carteret High (Carteret County Schools); the 2013 North Carolina finalists for the Presidential Awards in Math and Science Teaching: Science, Grades 7-12 - Laura Lawrence, Asheville School, Jeff Milbourne, North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and Mark Townley, Holly Springs High (Wake County Schools); the 2012 North Carolina Presidential Award recipients in Math and Science Teaching: Mathematics, Grades K-6  - Tonya Kepley, Enochville Elementary (Rowan-Salisbury Schools) and Science K-6, Teresa Cowan, Charles D. Owen Middle (Buncombe County Schools). Board members also will recognize new State Board of Education Advisors: Brady Johnson, Iredell/Statesville Schools’ superintendent and the Board’s 2014-15 Superintendent Advisor; and James E. Ford, Charlotte/Mecklenburg Schools, 2014-16 NC Teacher of the Year Advisor.

 

 

 

State Superintendent June Atkinson will then give her report to the Board. During her report, NCDPI Legislative and Community Affairs Director Rachel Beaulieu will report on legislative activities and Race to the Top Director Adam Levinson will give a report on Race to the Top activities. State Board Staff Attorney Katie Cornetto will follow with a rules review update. 

 

 Under the Board’s Information Agenda, members will receive a presentation on the Read to Achieve Report on the Use of the Formative, Diagnostic Assessment System, Reading 3D. 

 

Under the Consent Agenda, members will approve the Policy Delineating the Components of the READY Accountability Model including Annual Measurable Objectives, Race to the Top Evaluation Report: North Carolina Regional Leadership Academies – Final Activity Report, Race to the Top Performance Incentives in North Carolina: A Summative Report, Report to the North Carolina General Assembly: Care for Students with Diabetes for LEAs and Charter Schools, Charter Amendment to Change the Name of Crossnore Academy, and North Carolina Virtual Public School Blended Learning System Courses Final Report: Impact, Qualitative Assessment, and Policy Recommendations. 

 

 

Committee chairs will then report out and members will take action on regular agenda items as appropriate. 

 

Chairman Bill Cobey will conclude the meeting with his comments followed by a discussion of any new and old business.
