Jane Fernandes Takes Helm Of Guilford College, First Woman To Lead School PDF Print E-mail

RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Former UNC-Asheville Provost Jane Fernandes is busy settling in to her new job as President of Guilford College, but the English professor faces one major challenge that most of her peer presidents do not. 

 
Fernandes is deaf. She hasn't yet hired a full-time interpreter, according to the Greensboro News-Record, and is using temporary intepreters to communicate. 
 
Fernandes is the first woman and first deaf person to hold the job.
 
The newspaper reports Fernandes plans to focus on lowering tuition and increasing enrollment at the private college , as well as working with the city of Greensboro. 
 
The college has a student body of 2,302 and offers 33 majors and 53 minors. Its website boasts of the personal attention offered by 118 faculty, with a student-faculty ratio of 15 to 1.
