RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Measuring the performance of North Carolina public schools will get clearer and easier under a new state law. On Monday, Gov. Pat McCrory signed into law House Bill 230 -- "Clarify Read to Achieve/School Performance Grades.

“This legislation improves the implementation of Read to Achieve and the A-F grading process,” said the governor in a statement. “I would like to thank the General Assembly for listening to the feedback of parents, educators and policy advisors across the state.”

House Bill 230 also expands the testing window for one year.

Read to Achieve seeks to ensure that students are proficient at reading by the third grade. Legislators also are seeking to give parents and school officials a way to clearly identify how a school is performing by assigning letter grades.

The bill became law June 10, 2014.
