RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - In response to a court ruling that imposes a temporary injunction on the state's new opportunity scholarship program for low-income families, Lt. Gov. Dan Forest released the following statement:

"Today the Wake County Superior Court made a disappointing decision. The decision halted the disbursement of opportunity scholarships, which have a focused purpose of providing critical financial aid to the poorest students in North Carolina.

The decision, in effect, robs educational opportunity from those students who need it the most. The Wake County Superior Court sentenced the children of failing schools to a path of no options, no hope, and no future."

Advocates who petitioned the court to stop the program hailed the judge's decision as one that protects the state's public school system.

Several thousand North Carolina families have already applied for the scholarships, which were set to begin later this year.
