RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Jean Beagle Ristaino, William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Plant Pathology, has been named a 2012 Jefferson Science Fellow, which is administered by the National Academies. 

 
According to the NC State Bulletin, Ristaino will first assist the U.S. State Department as a science advisor who will travel overseas to U.S. embassies and missions for one year. Following that assignment, the professor will be a consultant to the State Department for five years.
Ristaino is an expert in food security issues and conducts research on the plant pathogen that caused the Irish potato famine. Her State Department assignment will further her interest in global food security, global climate change and plant disease, and women in agriculture.
 
The Jefferson Science Fellows program is designed to marry state-of-the-art science and technology solutions with foreign policy.
