NEW LONDON, (AP) — Stanly County authorities say a woman who was treasurer for the area PTA has been charged with stealing from the organization.

Deputies say 42-year-old Kristi Williams Humphrey turned herself in Thursday on charges of embezzlement and forgery.

Authorities say Humphrey took money from the North Stanly Middle School PTA last month.
They say she failed to properly deposit cash into the PTA's bank account and wrote several unauthorized checks on the account, forging endorsements on them and using the money for herself.

Deputies said Humphrey was being held on bond, and it wasn't known if she had an attorney. She is scheduled to be in court June 25.
