LENOIR, (AP) — Authorities say four students at a Lenoir elementary school have been taken to the hospital after they were exposed to mercury.

Officials said a fifth-grader at Whitnel Elementary School in Lenoir brought a vial of mercury to school and it spilled Wednesday morning.

Authorities say the four children exposed to the chemical were decontaminated on the scene and taken to the hospital for observation.

The school was been evacuated and children were taken to a nearby church while crews clean up the mercury spill.

Authorities don't know how the child got the mercury or why he brought it to school
